Queensland > Lesley Bray  > Travel > Queensland > Birdsville & Windorah
This is the closing stage of our tour. We left Birdsville on 8 September in an attempt to stay ahead of the forecasted rain, we did not want to find ourselves stranded again. It was my eldest son's 40th birthday. The road to Windorah was closed so we headed northwards towards Bedourie and turned south along the Diamantina Development Road towards Windorah. This detour was really the long way around, and we were advised to proceed with caution. That evening we camped out on the treeless gibber plains near Boundary Creek on the Diamantina Development Road, the next day we were caught in an amazingly severe storm just outside of Windorah. Relieved not to be stranded by flooding again, we made it into Quilpie. It has been a great five months and now it is over.

Lesley Bray > Morning storm clouds looming at Birdsville, outback Queensland, Australia we decided to leave as quickly as possible as bad weather had been predicted for the following day. We did not want to be stranded by bad weather twice in one week. Thankfully these clouds dissipated quickly and we were blissfully unaware of the powerful storm that would hit us the next afternoon.

Lesley Bray > One of Australia's rarest plants, the Waddi Trees (Acacia puece) have spiky, needle-like leaves and thick bark. The Waddi tree piqued early explorer William John Wills' interest, and some samples of the seeds found buried in his diary after his death. The extreme hardness of Waddi wood was put to a number of uses by the local Aboriginals and European settlers. Now a protected species you can find these trees on the fringe of the Simpson Desert in Queensland and the Northern Territory.

Lesley Bray > On a treeless plain, north of Birdsville in the middle of nowhere, beside the Eyre Development Road it seems a farmer has found an ideal way of ridding himself of his old furniture, or perhaps his long suffering wife has decided to force the issue in an effort to refurnish her home. Either way, it was very strange to see it sitting in the desert.

Lesley Bray > Carcory Homestead was built by Hector and Norman Wilson in the 1877 from local limestone.
After a long drought and the loss of around 4,000 bullocks the harsh environment forced famous cattleman, Sir Sydney Kidman, to abandon Carcory Homestead in 1906. Today it is part of Roseberth Station.

Lesley Bray > In the late afternoon we camped on this treeless gibber plain near Boundary Creek on the Diamantina Development Road between Bedourie and Windorah, in Outback Queensland, Australia. A treeless horizon for 360 degrees, only the insects and hawks for company then along came a truck to kick up the dust. Today is a special day, my eldest son turns 40 and I am sitting out here without internet or phone signal.
