Gantheaume Lighthouse
Gantheaume Lighthouse and Lightkeepers House, at Gantheaume Point, Broome, Kimberley Region, Western Australia. The first lighthouse was commissioned in 1905 with construction completed in 1906 along with a four room keeper's quarters and stone fireplace. The first lighthouse was a 47 foot steel tower with a kerosene light that the keeper would have to refuel and light. In 1917 a new lighthouse was built that used acetylene as fuel which could be kept at the base of the tower in a large store. Carpentaria Lightship CLS4
Carpentaria Lightship CLS4 One of 4 lightships built by the Commonwealth in 1916-1917 Lightships are floating lighthouses. They warn ships of dangers, act as navigational aids and are used where lighthouses cannot be built. As part of the Commonwealth's responsibility for safety at sea, four lightships were built in 1916 and 1917. CLS4 spent most of its working life marking the Merkara shoals in the Gulf of Carpentaria. It was also periodically moved to Sandy Cape (Queensland). CLS4 was towed to Bass Strait in 1983 to serve as a traffic separator for ships working in the oilfields. It was retired from in 1985. Queensland Maritime Museum
Outdoor part of Queensland Maritime Museum at South Bank Parklands, South Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Photo taken from the Goodwill Bridge. Navy frigate HMAS Diamantina is in the South Brisbane Dry Dock. Steam Tug SS Forceful built in 1925 docked at wharf. At the centre of the photo is the Torres Strait pearling lugger "Penguin" which was used by the Americans during WW2. The lighthouse tower from the ex-Bulwar Island in Moreton Bay at the mouth of the Brisbane River where it operated from 1912 to 1983. Captain Cook Bridge in background. Saturday 30 August 2008 - Cleveland Point Lighthouse - taken just after sunrise this morning - I think this looks nicer viewed in Large. Monday 18 February 2008 - Called in at Cleveland Point on my way home from work, Cleveland is two suburbs north of where I live. This is the old lighthouse down there - built in 1864 with timber in an unusual hexagonal shape. In 1976 a boring new lighthouse was built and this one was laid to rest. Unfortunately the tide was so low you cannot see any water in the background.
