Thomas Maddock arrived at Moreton Bay, Queensland as a 4 year old on the 'Artemesia' in 1848. It was the first government sponsored ship to arrive in Queensland. Moreton Bay at that time was not much more than a convict settlement and was still part of New South Wales as Queensland had not yet been proclaimed a state of Australia. Moreton Bay was desperate for skilled workmen and therefore the ship was sent to Queensland - not as many workmen as expected because a lot of wives and children travelled with them. Thomas Jnr is listed here as having arrived on 13 Dec 1848 with his parents Thomas & Mary and his siblings Richard, Mary, John, Elizabeth and Catherine.
Thomas Snr is listed as a labourer born in Cullinton, (Callington), Cornwall and he could read. His wife Mary could both read and write and she was born in St Clair, Cornwall. It is interesting that brother Richard is listed as a Farm Labourer at 14 years of age - he was able to read.
