McGilvery

Descendants of Alexander McGilvery and Ellen Farmer married in Kilshannig-by-Mallow in County Cork, Ireland.
I don't know where Alexander was born, though I suspect it was in Scotland.

  • My great great grandparents - Alexander McGilvery (seated) and Ellen Farmer (standing).
Alexander McGilvery born 1831 ( I don't know where) and died in 1881 at Danesfort, Kilshannig by Mallow, County Cork, Ireland.
Ellen Farmer was born in 1832 in Millfort, Kilshannig by Mallow and died in 1901 in San Francisco, California, United States of America.
They married in 1852 in Danesfort and I believe they had 15 children, 14 of which I have traced. At least 7 died as infants. 4 children, Thomas, Richard, Ellen and Anne immigrated to America, 1 son, Edward immigrated to Australia, 1 son John enlisted with the 109th Regiment of Foot and died in Valetta, Malta. After Alexanders death at the age of 50 years, Ellen joined her children in San Francisco, California where she died at 69 years of age.

This photo was given to me by Robyn Bennett, a McGilvery descendant.

  • This is my great grandfather Edward McGilvery (1865-1945) - son of Alexander & Ellen McGilvery (nee Farmer). Edward was born in Kilshannig by Mallow (probably Danesfort) and died in Hendra, Brisbane, Australia. Edward immigrated to Australia on the SS Caroline in 1882 - why he chose to come to Australia when his siblings immigrated to America is not known. He married Albertine Parnemann, a German girl, in Toowoomba, Queensland in 1887. Unfortunately Albertine passed away just 3 weeks after their youngest son was born, leaving Edward with five young children to care for.
Edward remarried in 1902 to Mary Jane Jarrett (nee Ratcliffe). Mary had two children to her 1st marriage, and Edward & Mary had no children together. Edward's children spoke very well of Mary Jane.

  • My grandfather John McGilvery (1894-1961).
I never met him - my Mum doesn't remember him.
John (Jack) was the son of Edward & Albertine McGilvery (nee Parnemann). He was born in Toowoomba, and died in Riverview near Ipswich, Queensland. It took me years to trace where and when he died. He married my grandmother Barbara May Munro in 1914 in Dalby. At the time of their marriage, John worked at 'Dalby Downs', a station at the base of the Bunya Mountains. John and May had six children together, when he left the family to fend for themselves. I have very little information about him and would appreciate hearing any knowledge about him.
